New 349cc engine brings lower price, slight torque drop, and improved accessibility for Bajaj’s flagship touring motorcycle lineup.
Bajaj Dominar 400 receives an engine update that lowers the displacement to 349cc and makes the touring bike more affordable. Its price has been reduced to Rs 2.04 lakh after the change that leads to savings of around Rs 37,000.
Engine Change Reduces Price Point
The major change involves the new engine displacement that stands at 349cc using a single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine layout. Thanks to the reduction in cubic capacity, Bajaj is able to claim benefits from lower taxation rates that are passed on to the customer.
The output capacity for the engine remains relatively unchanged with a maximum power output of 40.6hp @ 9,000 rpm compared to earlier 40hp. On the other hand, torque has been lowered to 33.2Nm @ 7,500rpm due to reductions in 1.8Nm.
Changes in Performance and Other Features
The updated engine is mated with a 6-speed gearbox while Bajaj Dominar 400 is now 3 kg lighter compared to the older motorcycle, tipping the scales at 190 kg. In comparison to the old bike’s 373cc engine shared with the KTM 390s generated 40 hp (similar to the current model) but featured more torque of 35Nm.
Design & Features Remains Same
Excluding the motor, there have not been any other changes in Dominar 400. The bike still sports a power-cruiser design, tourer riding position, and features like ABS, Bluetooth, and USB port. The Dominar’s variants are this time limited to green and black.
Price & Positioning
With an asking price of Rs 2.04 lakh, this latest Dominar 400 is now far more affordable than before. The bike enjoys a gap of Rs 26,000 over Bajaj Dominar 250. Such an aggressive price point makes the bike an attractive product for people looking for a powerful touring motorcycle on a tight budget.
What Comes Next?
With Bajaj opting for such an engine downsize, there may be a possibility that other vehicles might follow suit in the coming years. This includes the newly launched Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z, which might get powered by a 349cc engine shortly.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the improved Dominar 400 showcases how well Bajaj has managed to strike a balance between power and price. With its engine size reduced without any significant loss in performance, the motorcycle manufacturer’s flagship tourer becomes all the more affordable to purchase.
