SUVs and EVs Drive July Car Sales as Tata, Kia and Toyota Post Strong Growth

July 2026 sales numbers show a clear trend — Indian buyers are still favouring SUVs and electric vehicles are also starting to contribute significant volumes along with traditional powertrains.

A familiar pattern continues to define the Indian passenger vehicle market, as highlighted by the July 2026 sales figures reported by Tata Motors, Kia India, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor. SUVs remain the biggest growth drivers, while electric vehicles are steadily moving from being niche offerings to volume contributors.

Among the three manufacturers, Tata Motors recorded the strongest year-on-year growth, selling 63,760 passenger vehicles during the month, up 59 per cent over July last year. More notably, the company sold 15,217 electric vehicles, registering a massive 114 per cent growth, highlighting the increasing acceptance of EVs among Indian buyers.

Kia India, meanwhile, reported its best-ever July wholesale performance since entering the Indian market. The company dispatched 28,200 units, reflecting a 27.4 per cent year-on-year increase, while cumulative sales for the January-July period grew 16.8 per cent. Kia credited the strong performance to consistent demand for the Seltos and Sonet, with the Carens Clavis, Clavis EV, MY26 Syros and the newly launched Syros EV further boosting volumes.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor continued its steady growth trajectory, reporting 32,516 units in July, including 30,516 domestic sales, representing a 5 per cent increase over the same month last year. The company also highlighted the recent launch of the all-new Hilux as one of the key developments during the month, while its calendar year sales are up 13 per cent.

While each manufacturer has a different product strategy, the underlying trend remains consistent. SUVs continue to dominate customer preferences across price segments. Utility vehicles still form the backbone of sales for most mainstream manufacturers, ranging from smaller offerings like the Sonet and Nexon to larger models like the Hyryder, Fortuner and Hilux.

Electric vehicles are also playing a bigger role. Kia is fast expanding its electric portfolio with the Carens Clavis EV and Syros EV, while Tata continues to be the leader in EV volumes. Rather than serving as halo products, EVs are now becoming a meaningful part of overall monthly sales.

With several new launches lined up during the festive season, the momentum is expected to continue through the second half of the year. If July’s numbers are any indication, Indian buyers aren’t just buying more cars—they’re increasingly choosing SUVs, and they’re becoming far more comfortable making the switch to electric mobility.
