Toyota’s ninth-generation Hilux will arrive with a completely redesigned exterior, premium cabin, new technology, and a possible 48V diesel mild-hybrid powertrain.
The Toyota Hilux, a lifestyle pickup truck, will be launched just eight months after its global debut last year. Replacing the present-generation model, which has been sold in the country for more than four years, the new Hilux will not only sport an entirely revamped exterior and interior but also receive mechanical improvements, including the addition of mild-hybrid technology. Owing to the comprehensive upgrades, the forthcoming Hilux is expected to carry a higher price tag compared to the existing one, costing between Rs 28.52 lakh and Rs 36 lakh (ex-showroom).
Updated Design
The ninth-generation Toyota Hilux sports a more modern and muscular appearance while still maintaining its ruggedness. Up front, it comes equipped with narrow LED headlights joined by glossy black trim featuring the Toyota name. A bigger honeycomb mesh grille, sharp air intakes, and an aggressively styled bumper add to this design.
Seen from the side, the pickup features more refined body sheet metal, square-edged wheel arch guards, and a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the pickup gains vertically stacked C-shaped LED taillights, a big Toyota logo on the tailgate, and a revamped bumper with lots of cladding.
Modern and Tech-Advanced Interior
Perhaps the most striking change is the interior, where the Hilux features an all-new dashboard with a much more upscale feel. The standout feature here is the dual 12.3-inch display system made up of a digital instrument cluster and an infotainment display. There are also physical buttons for key controls to make life easier off the road.
Feature highlights include dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, wireless charging, connected car features, terrain drive modes, a 360-degree camera, a multi-terrain camera, over-the-air software updates, and an ADAS package that includes driver drowsiness detection and a blind-spot monitor.
Engine Options
The India-spec Hilux is likely to stick with the reliable 2.8L diesel engine, churning out 204hp and 500Nm of torque, and available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Toyota may also introduce the 48V Neo Drive mild-hybrid system to improve fuel economy and low-speed driving.
What To Expect
This generation of the Hilux introduces a number of important changes in terms of style, comfort, technology, and efficiency. Thus, this pickup will compete more closely with lifestyle SUVs than previous models. Although an all-electric Hilux EV is being offered in other parts of the world, India will only get the diesel-powered model, given the limited appeal of pickup vehicles in the Indian market.
