Maruti Suzuki to debut India’s first E100 flex-fuel passenger car on World Environment Day, boosting ethanol mobility ambitions

As the nation steps up its efforts to adopt alternate and cleaner energy, the Indian automaker Maruti Suzuki will be introducing a new generation flex fuel vehicle in its lineup on June 5, World Environment Day. This was revealed at a public function in Nagpur by India’s Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
It is being estimated that this new car from Maruti Suzuki will be the country’s first flex fuel vehicle that can run on 100% ethanol-based fuel. Although there is no official confirmation about what model it will be, it is understood that car maker could have the same platform as their existing Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Maruti Suzuki Fronx models.
What Are Flex Fuel Vehicles?

Flex fuel vehicles refer to engines that are capable of using more than one fuel mixture. For instance, flex fuel vehicles can use petrol blended with high amounts of ethanol. With respect to the E100 fuel mixture, there will be need for specific modifications within the engine to accommodate the fuel due to its ability to corrode.
India has currently embraced E20 petrol as the national standard, while Bureau of Indian Standards has provided specifications for E22, E25, E27 and E30. The Indian government is targeting to incorporate ethanol in order to cut down its dependency on crude oil imports.
Government Urging for Clean Fuels

In regard to the coming launch, Gadkari talked about the advantages of using ethanol as a source of power. In particular, as mentioned by the minister, 87 percent of the country’s petrol and diesel needs are covered through imports, thereby making India dependent on volatile world oil market rates.
The introduction of ethanol will not only allow for the reduction of harmful emissions but will also provide economic and financial benefits by minimizing the need for fuel imports and creating further demands for agricultural goods used in the production process.
Toyota, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra have previously shown flexible models that use ethanol-based fuel, but the first automaker who will start selling the E100 vehicle will be Maruti Suzuki.
Fronx or Wagon R?
Suzuki has revealed an E85-capable Fronx coupe crossover SUV at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 event. In the past, the company had introduced an experimental flex-fuel Maruti Suzuki Wagon R at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. Nonetheless, both vehicles were designed to run on less concentrated blends than the next one planned to hit the market.
It is thought that this new product launch might represent the start of a whole flex-fuel ecosystem in India even though its adoption may be constrained by difficulties related to fueling stations and greater vehicle development expenses.
Now that Maruti Suzuki is ready to make a debut in the field of E100 technology, India’s strategy regarding alternative fuels is set to evolve away from EVs and CNG.
