It is India’s first E85-compatible mass-market car, and it runs on flexible fuel blends from E20 up to E85 petrol. But the core buying decision regarding this vehicle depends on whether you want to live with ₹20 per litre savings on E85 fuel by justifying the drop in fuel economy. Because compared to buying the standard petrol or factory CNG variants, this vehicle runs on ethanol’s lower energy density. What’s New in the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R E85?

To run the vehicle on 85 per cent ethanol, Maruti Suzuki has made a lot of mechanical changes, especially to prevent fuel line corrosion and ensure reliable cold starts from the vehicle.

Note: The Wagon R Flex Fuel has a heated fuel rail and a dedicated ethanol sensor to instantly adjust the ignition timing according to the exact ethanol blend currently in the tank.

Also, ethanol is highly hygroscopic and corrosive, which means standard rubber fuel lines and regular fuel pumps degrade quickly if exposed to E85 over long periods. So Maruti Suzuki has replaced the entire fuel delivery system with corrosion-resistant components and installed hardened valve seats to handle the drier, hotter combustion characteristics of heavy ethanol blends.

E85 struggles to vaporise efficiently in colder temperatures as well. To address this, the manufacturer has fitted a heated fuel rail inside the Wagon R E85 to guarantee reliable cold engine starts during winter mornings.

Engine Specifications and Performance

The powertrain of this vehicle remains identical to its predecessor. Even the peak power outputs are the same.

The Wagon R Flex Fuel is powered by the 1.2L K-Series engine, delivering 88.5 bhp and 113.7 Nm of torque through a 5-speed manual transmission. The car drives exactly like the standard petrol model, providing the same low-end grunt for city overtakes and identical highway stability at 100 kmph. Drivers will not come across any compromise in mechanical performance or pedal response when switching between standard E20 petrol and E85 blends.

Comparing the pump price against actual fuel consumption reveals the real financial viability of running the E85 hatchback in daily traffic.

Note: While E85 is nearly ₹20 cheaper per litre than standard E20 petrol, its lower energy density means you have to burn more fuel to cover the exact distance.

While the Wagon R E85 has an ARAI petrol economy of 25.19 kmpl, running the car exclusively on E85 at ₹91.18 per litre drops the real-world fuel economy as the ECU injects more fuel to maintain power. Consequently, the cheaper pump price is largely offset by the vehicle consuming more fuel per kilometre.

The overall running cost remains slightly cheaper than standard petrol, but it cannot match the extreme sub-₹2 per kilometre financial savings offered by the ₹6.49 lakh VXi CNG variant.

Looking closely at the high-spec ZXi Plus trim, the flex-fuel variant keeps all the interior conveniences and storage dimensions of the usual top-tier model.

Note: Unlike the CNG variant that gives up almost its entire boot to accommodate a heavy steel gas cylinder, the E85 model retains its deep 341-litre cargo bay, easily swallowing family luggage and oversized airport bags.

The cabin features a 7-inch touchscreen with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while 6 airbags come fitted as standard equipment to improve baseline occupant safety over older models. This vehicle sticks to being a highly practical, tall-boy hatchback that conveniently manages tall passengers and heavy cargo without spatial restrictions.

It offers the flexibility to run on any ethanol blend from E20 up to E85 without giving up a single litre of boot capacity or engine performance. However, because E85 fuel stations are still expanding across the country and the lower energy density of ethanol makes the cheaper pump price negligible, the E85 model does not realistically slash monthly running costs.

It’s an apt choice for buyers who want an environmentally conscious, fully practical city car. Still, budget-focused buyers with heavy daily distances will find the factory CNG variant far cheaper to run over the long term.
