Buyer guide

What you can realistically expect luxury cars.

01
Entry hatchbacks dominate this bracket
Under ₹5 lakh ex-showroom, the market is primarily entry-level hatchbacks. Maruti Alto, Renault Kwid, and basic Tata Tiago variants offer basic transportation with acceptable safety. These are city commuters, not highway cruisers.
02
Safety is basic but improving
Dual airbags, ABS, and seatbelt reminders are now mandatory across all cars. However, expect no ESP, no multiple airbags beyond the driver/passenger pair, and minimal passive safety features at this price.
03
Fuel choice is primarily petrol or CNG
Petrol is the default at this budget. CNG variants add to running cost savings — the Maruti Alto CNG delivers exceptional economy. Diesel and EVs are not available at this price point.
04
Best for first-time buyers or city use only
These cars are best suited as a first car, second household car, or pure city commuter. Do not expect highway comfort, long-distance capability, or premium features.
Common questions

Cars Luxury Cars · FAQ.

What is the best car in Luxury Cars in India in 2026?
The best car depends on your priorities. For safety, look at Tata models with 5★ NCAP. For value, Maruti Suzuki leads in resale and service network. For features, Hyundai and Kia pack the most tech per rupee. Compare on-road prices for your city before deciding.
Is the on-road price the same as ex-showroom?
No. On-road price typically adds 12–15% over ex-showroom for petrol/diesel cars (RTO registration, insurance, handling charges). For EVs it is only 3–5% since RTO registration is free or reduced in most states. A car at ₹15 lakh ex-showroom can cost ₹17.1–17.4 lakh on-road in metro cities.
What are the hidden costs when buying a car?
Beyond ex-showroom: RTO registration (8–12% for petrol, 0% for EVs), insurance (1–2% of IDV), handling/accessories (₹15,000–₹40,000), extended warranty (optional, ₹10,000–₹30,000). Always get a complete on-road price quote from the dealer before finalising.
Should I choose petrol, diesel, or CNG?
Petrol is simplest for low annual mileage (<12,000 km/yr). Diesel saves ₹3–4/km but add ₹1.5–2 lakh upfront — only worth it above 18,000 km/yr. CNG cuts running cost to ~₹1.5/km but requires CNG station access. EVs cost just ₹0.8–1.2/km to run but need home charging or good public infra.
How important are NCAP safety ratings?
5★ Global NCAP is now achievable under ₹15 lakhs (Tata Nexon, Punch, Mahindra XUV 3XO). A higher-rated car is significantly safer in real crashes — a tested car can be 2× safer than an untested one. Never buy an untested car if a 5★ option exists at similar price.
