Patent drawings reveal Yamaha’s next-generation electric scooter with an all-new drivetrain and premium hardware.
Yamaha’s new electric scooter has leaked through a patent filing in Japan, giving us a look at a production-ready design of a completely new product from the company. Despite the fact that this product does not match any existing model, its design shares many similarities with the Ray ZR 125, except for the electric drivetrain.
The patent hints at a future premium EV offering for global markets, including India.
Unique Drivetrain Makes It Different from Others
One of the most interesting aspects of this new electric scooter is its centrally mounted drivetrain system. This is quite different from the Indian Yamaha Aerox-E, which has an electric motor mounted on the swingarm.
The centrally mounted motor offers better weight distribution along with lower unsprung mass, which translates into improved ride quality and handling. Yamaha had earlier used a similar setup on its EC-06 electric scooter. However, this new design showcases technological advancements that help accommodate a larger-capacity battery for better range.
According to the design registration, it is evident that the battery pack is positioned under the seat. This suggests that Yamaha is considering either removable or swappable battery packs.
Hardware and Features
From the patent drawings, we can see that the scooter uses telescopic front forks and dual rear shock absorbers for suspension duties. However, the interesting aspect of the rear shocks is that they are positioned farther forward on the swingarm than on traditional scooters, creating additional space for the battery pack under the seat. Disc brakes are fitted at both ends.
Other features visible in the patent drawings include multiple storage areas in the front apron, a small TFT instrument cluster, and possibly keyless ignition, as there is no visible key slot on the front apron.
Is It Coming to India?
Currently, Yamaha’s electric two-wheeler line-up is quite limited. It has launched the Neo’s electric scooter in Europe, while in India, the brand sells the EC-06 on the River Indie platform, along with the Aerox-E.
Considering its size and features, the newly patented Yamaha scooter appears well suited for the Indian market. However, Yamaha has not confirmed any plans to manufacture or launch the scooter, and the design remains only a Japanese patent filing for now.
