Tata Motors has started validating the Chery-derived E0X platform that will underpin its upcoming Avinya premium electric vehicles.
It was recently confirmed by Tata Motors that its Avinya models will be built on the Freelander EV platform, developed as part of the Chery-JLR partnership in China. Known internally as the E0X platform, it serves as the base for multiple models produced by the Chery Group, including the Exeed Sterra ES sedan and the Sterra ET SUV.
The Sterra ET is currently being utilised by Tata for testing and benchmarking its future premium EVs. Although the silhouette of the SUV is similar to that of the Avinya X concept car, the test vehicle is not related to the Avinya concept in any way and does not showcase the final design of the Tata vehicle.
Instead, the company is currently testing the platform and its mechanical components before integrating Tata-specific technologies.
Tata to adapt the software and vehicles for India
Even though the Avinya family of vehicles will utilise the E0X architecture, Tata Motors is likely to adapt the vehicle’s electronics, software, and control systems to suit Indian conditions and customer preferences.
Advantages of using the E0X architecture
The Exeed Sterra ET, which is based on the E0X platform, is a 4.9-metre-long premium SUV available in both all-electric and range-extender hybrid variants.
The all-electric variant runs on an advanced 800V electrical architecture, supports battery packs of up to 100 kWh, and is available in both RWD and AWD configurations, with a claimed driving range of up to 760 km on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).
The range-extender hybrid, on the other hand, combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with either a 32 kWh or 41.2 kWh battery pack on a 400V architecture, delivering a total claimed range of up to 1,518 km (CLTC).
Additionally, the SUV is equipped with Level 2 ADAS, over-the-air software updates, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality.
Avinya X set for launch in 2027
According to Tata Motors, the first model under its Avinya sub-brand will be the Avinya X, which is scheduled to launch in 2027. Platform testing indicates that development is progressing steadily as the automaker prepares to introduce its next-generation software-defined EVs in India’s premium electric vehicle market.
