JSW Motors Teases 140km EV-Range Hybrid SUV to Take on XUV700, Safari

February 27, 2026 Yoshika Chhabra

JSW Motors is set to enter India’s crowded mid-size SUV market with a plug-in hybrid capable of delivering up to 140km of pure electric range, marking a bold shift from conventional ICE and strong hybrid offerings. The design and lighting pattern of the vehicle are a dead giveaway that the new offering will be based on the Jetour T2 i-DM, a rugged plug-in hybrid SUV that is already being retailed in international markets.

This is the first indication that JSW Motors is planning to foray into the rapidly growing electric hybrid SUV market in India with a globally competitive offering, as opposed to a traditional ICE-powered vehicle. The groundwork for a 2026 launch has already begun, with the company shortlisting dealer partners in India.

Exterior Design

The Jetour T2 i-DM is marked by its boxy, off-road-like design. The teaser shows round LED headlamps housed in rectangular casings, a flat hood, and squared-off front ends — all of which are essential design elements of the international model.

Globally, the SUV comes with chunky bumpers with skid plates, robust shoulder lines, and flared wheel arches. Roof rails and oversized alloy wheels add to its rugged character. These design elements will likely be carried forward to India. The SUV’s upright and muscular stance will give it a rugged appeal compared to the curved crossover designs that are prevalent in the segment.

The overall design stance is meant to convey road presence, which suggests that JSW will position the SUV as a lifestyle and adventure vehicle to take on the likes of the newly launched Tata Sierra.

Interior

The interior design of the car features a horizontal dashboard layout, which gives a layered effect. The interior is a good mix of premium appeal as well as functionality. The driver gets a high seating position and a broad center armrest, providing a commanding view of the road ahead. The use of materials and soft-touch plastics in the international variant indicates that it is designed to offer an overall premium experience. Showcasing its technological strength, the Jetour T2 i-DM is equipped with a large central infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster. Connected car features, wireless smartphone connectivity, and voice control are also part of the package.  Features like a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and ventilated seats further will also make it in the top varinat of the SUV.

Safety

The higher variants of the international model come with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which include adaptive cruise control, lane departure assist, and a 360-degree camera system.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

The Jetour T2 i-DM comes with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, an electric motor, and a large battery pack, making it a plug-in hybrid vehicle. This allows the car to run purely on electricity for up to 140 km. With the gasoline motor, expect a total claimed range of 800 km on a single tank. If launched with the same hybrid powertrain, the JSW SUV would be a unique offering in the Indian market, where plug-in hybrid variants are not very common.

Market Position and Competition

The new SUV is expected to be positioned in the premium mid-size SUV segment. It will compete with the likes of the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari, Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitra Hybrid to name a few.

JSW Motors seems to be trying to stand out in the market by offering something different: an SUV with a tough design and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This would appeal to people who want a different experience from a regular gasoline or diesel SUV.

Conclusion

JSW Motors is setting the stage for its passenger car plans in India with its Jetour T2 SUV. The car’s aggressive design, tech-laden interior, and plug-in hybrid powertrain indicate that the company is planning to enter one of the most competitive segments in the Indian automobile market for the long run. To sweeten the deal, we expect the SUV to be priced around the ₹15 to ₹20 lakh price range, given the extra cost of the larger plug-in battery pack.
