The premium hatchback has evolved through three generations and could soon welcome an all-new fourth-generation model.

Gurugram: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that the Hyundai i20 has crossed the 1.5 million-unit sales milestone in India, reaffirming its status as one of the country’s most successful premium hatchbacks. The i20 has gone through three generations since its debut in 2008 and has remained a strong contender in the segment, thanks to its premium design, technology, and safety features.
19 years of segment firsts

The Hyundai i20 revolutionized small-car safety by becoming the first hatchback to offer six airbags. It later introduced rear AC vents with the second-generation model in 2014 and today sets the digital benchmark with a massive 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Hyundai also offers a sportier version of the hatchback in the form of the i20 N Line, which is aimed at driving enthusiasts.
What makes the third generation unique?

The current Hyundai i20 is powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). For buyers seeking a sportier experience, the i20 N Line features a 1.0-litre Turbo GDi petrol engine with the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The hatchback continues to offer a premium feature package, including six airbags as standard, a 10.25-inch infotainment display with navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluelink connectivity, a voice-controlled electric sunroof, a wireless charger, a Bose seven-speaker audio system, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hill Start Assist Control), a dashboard camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
4th generation in 2027?
While the premium hatchback segment has lost ground to compact SUVs, the 1.5 million-unit sales milestone shows there is still demand for a stylish hatchback. Hyundai has not confirmed the launch of the next-generation model, but camouflaged fourth-generation i20 prototypes have been spotted testing in India.
