Mahindra’s upcoming Vision X sub-4m SUV moves a step closer to production as design patents surface, previewing a sub-four-metre SUV with ICE and EV powertrain options.
Mahindra has filed a design patent for the Vision X, its upcoming sub-4-metre SUV based on the brand’s next-generation NU IQ architecture. The design patent images closely resemble those of the Vision X concept revealed last year, suggesting that the production model will retain a strikingly similar design.
The Vision X forms part of the recently patented Vision SXT and Vision T concepts, which are expected to form the core of Mahindra’s future SUV lineup. Testing of multiple vehicles based on the NU IQ architecture has already begun, with launches expected throughout the 2027 calendar year.
Design inspired by the concept
As evident from the design patent images, Mahindra has retained most of the styling cues from the concept. At the front, the SUV features a unique X-shaped grille flanked by trapezoidal headlamps. The grille is further highlighted by vertically slotted elements and the Twin Peaks badge, while slim LED DRLs sit above it.
The front bumper features a layered design with a prominent skid plate, adding to the SUV’s rugged appeal. The sculpted bonnet lines further enhance its sporty stance.
On the sides, the Vision X gets square-shaped wheel arches, large alloy wheels, flush-fitting door handles and roof rails. In addition, the patent application shows outside rear-view mirrors (ORVMs) with integrated cameras, although these are unlikely to make it to the production model due to current regulations.
At the rear, the SUV features LED tail lamps, a roof-mounted spoiler, vertical reflectors and a chunky rear bumper.
Premium interior with technology
Although the patent only covers the vehicle’s exterior, the Vision X concept showcased a modern interior with a dual-tone cabin, curved dashboard and a two-spoke rectangular steering wheel. The concept also featured dual curved digital displays, similar to the one seen in the Mahindras BE 6 SUVs.
The production version is expected to offer premium features such as a head-up display, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, over-the-air software updates, 5G connectivity, voice and gesture controls, a panoramic sunroof and an ADAS suite.
ICE and EV versions likely
Built on Mahindra’s flexible NU IQ platform, the Vision X is expected to be offered with both ICE and electric powertrains. Petrol and diesel engine options are likely for the ICE version, while reports suggest that the all-electric variant could debut before its combustion-powered counterpart.
Positioned above the Mahindra XUV 3XO in the company’s lineup, the Vision X is expected to be priced between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will rival models such as the Tata Nexon/Nexon EV, Kia Syros, Syros EV, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet.
With design patents now filed and prototype testing underway, the Vision X appears to be steadily moving towards production.
