BYD To Reveal First Plug-In Hybrid Car In India On June 9

The Atto 2 DM-i and Sealion 6 are among the leading contenders for BYD’s first PHEV launch in India.

BYD is preparing to unveil its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in India on June 9, marking a significant expansion of its product strategy in the country. The announcement follows a teaser released by the Chinese automaker, hinting at the introduction of a model equipped with its latest DM-i Super Hybrid technology.

The move will allow BYD to offer Indian customers a combination of electric driving capability and petrol-powered range, broadening its appeal beyond fully electric vehicles.

BYD Expands Beyond Pure EVs

Since entering the Indian market, BYD has focused exclusively on electric vehicles, including the BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal and BYD Sealion 7.

However, the company’s teaser released on May 26 confirmed that its next product for India will feature the brand’s DM-i Super Hybrid technology.

While BYD has not officially revealed the model, industry reports suggest two likely candidates: the BYD Atto 2 DM-i and the BYD Sealion 6.

Atto 2 DM-i Appears To Be The Strongest Candidate

The Atto 2 DM-i is currently considered the most likely option for India due to its positioning in the compact SUV segment, where it would compete with popular models such as the Hyundai Creta.

Globally, the Atto 2 DM-i is available with a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery pack. Depending on the variant, combined power outputs stand at 166 hp and 212 hp.

One of its biggest highlights is its claimed driving range. BYD claims the smaller battery version can deliver up to 928 km of combined range, while the larger battery version can travel up to 998 km. Pure electric range is rated at approximately 39 km.

Sealion 6 Also Remains A Possibility

The second likely candidate is the Sealion 6 PHEV, which shares design influences with the all-electric Sealion 7.

Internationally, the Sealion 6 is offered with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines, paired with either an 18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh battery pack.

The front-wheel-drive version produces a combined 218 hp and offers an electric-only range of up to 140 km. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive variant delivers up to 344 hp and an electric range of approximately 128 km.

BYD claims a total driving range of up to 1,092 km, making the Sealion 6 one of the longest-range plug-in hybrid SUVs currently available globally.

Why This Launch Matters

The introduction of a PHEV signals a strategic shift for BYD in India.

While EV adoption continues to grow, charging infrastructure remains a challenge in several parts of the country. Plug-in hybrids offer a practical middle ground by combining electric mobility for daily commuting with the convenience of a petrol engine for longer journeys.

As Indian buyers increasingly consider hybrid technology, BYD’s entry into the segment could help the brand expand its footprint beyond the premium EV market.

Official Reveal On June 9

All questions regarding the model, including its identity, specifications, launch timeline and pricing, are expected to be answered when BYD officially unveils its first plug-in hybrid vehicle for India on June 9.

Whether the company chooses the Atto 2 DM-i or the larger Sealion 6, the launch will mark a significant milestone for BYD’s India operations
