Iconic SUV could return with ladder-frame construction, hybrid powertrains and rugged new styling.

Mitsubishi Motors appears to be preparing the return of one of its most iconic nameplates as the all-new Mitsubishi Pajero moves closer to its global debut. Fresh renderings based on recent spy shots and teaser images offer a glimpse of the SUV’s muscular design while retaining the rugged off-road character for which the Pajero is known.
The next-generation Pajero is expected to play a key role in Mitsubishi’s aggressive global product strategy, which involves launching 13 new models by fiscal year 2031. Known as the Montero and Shogun in certain international markets, the latest Pajero is expected to return with enhanced performance, advanced technology and improved off-road capability.
Modern Styling With Traditional Pajero DNA

Although the fifth-generation Pajero adopts a more contemporary design language, it still retains several signature styling elements associated with its predecessor. The front fascia features pixel-inspired lighting elements along with a full-width LED light bar positioned above the large radiator grille.
The grille itself is sizeable and seamlessly integrated with the lighting setup. A sculpted bonnet and prominent bash plate below the bumper further emphasise the SUV’s rugged off-road intentions.

Viewed from the side, the Pajero maintains a boxy silhouette with squared wheel arches and large alloy wheels that are expected to measure either 18 or 19 inches. The blacked-out A-pillars create a floating roof effect, while roof rails and side steps enhance its adventure-focused appearance.
Distinct character lines run across the doors, while ladder-inspired detailing can be seen around the C-pillar area.
Tough Yet Premium Rear Design

At the rear, the SUV continues the same bold design theme. Full-width LED taillights stretching across the tailgate help create a wider visual stance. A roof spoiler, shark-fin antenna and redesigned rear bumper complete the exterior styling package.
One notable change compared to older Pajero models is the removal of the externally mounted spare wheel, which had long been a signature design element of the SUV.
Improved Off-Road Capability Through New Platform

Perhaps the biggest transformation lies underneath the bodywork. According to reports, the new Pajero will utilise a dedicated ladder-frame platform derived from the latest Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck.
This marks a departure from the fourth-generation Pajero, which used a monocoque structure combined with an integrated ladder-frame chassis. The switch is expected to significantly improve durability and off-road performance, strengthening the Pajero’s position in the body-on-frame SUV segment.
The upcoming Pajero is expected to rival models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X.
Multiple Powertrain Options Expected
Official engine specifications have not yet been revealed. However, reports suggest that the new Pajero could be offered with multiple powertrain options, including turbo-diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.
The plug-in hybrid version is expected to arrive at a later stage following the launch of the standard models.
India Launch Remains Uncertain
The all-new Pajero is expected to make its global debut later this year. While the SUV continues to enjoy strong brand recall among enthusiasts in India, Mitsubishi Motors has not confirmed any plans to reintroduce the model in the Indian market.
Nevertheless, the revival of the Pajero is likely to generate strong interest among SUV enthusiasts worldwide, particularly because of its rich legacy in rally racing and off-road adventures. With a tougher chassis and more modern styling, the iconic SUV appears ready for a major comeback.
