Buyer guide

What to know before buying a Scooter in India.

01
Automatic transmission makes city riding easy
Scooters are CVT-driven — no clutch, no gear shifts. Ideal for stop-and-go traffic. Most have underseat storage of 20–30 litres.
02
Check tyre size and ground clearance
Scooters have smaller wheels (10–12 inch) vs bikes (17–18 inch). Lower ground clearance can affect performance on bad roads. Check kerb weight too.
03
Mileage: 40–60 kmpl is the benchmark
Most 110–125cc scooters return 45–55 kmpl under city conditions. EVs offer equivalent savings with near-zero running costs once you factor in charging.
04
OBD2 and connected features are now common
Premium scooters (Honda Activa 6G, TVS Jupiter) now offer Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, and digital displays at the ₹80K–₹1.2L price point.
Common questions

Scooter Bikes · FAQ.

Are scooters better than motorcycles for city use?
Yes, for most city riders. Scooters offer automatic transmission (no gear changes), underseat storage, and a comfortable upright riding posture. They're easier to manoeuvre in traffic and simpler to maintain. The trade-off is less highway stability compared to bikes.
What is the best scooter under ₹1 lakh in India?
The Honda Activa 6G (₹76K–₹80K), TVS Jupiter (₹75K–₹83K), and Hero Destini (₹76K–₹82K) are the most popular choices. All offer good mileage (45–55 kmpl) and strong service networks.
Is the on-road price the same as the ex-showroom price?
No. On-road price adds RTO registration, insurance (1-year third-party + 5-year comprehensive), and dealer handling charges. This typically adds 10–18% for petrol bikes and 3–5% for electric bikes over the ex-showroom price.
What is the difference between ABS and CBS?
CBS (Combined Braking System) is mandatory for bikes under 125cc — applying the rear brake also partially applies the front. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is mandatory above 125cc and prevents wheel lock-up under hard braking, significantly improving safety.
How often do bikes need servicing?
Most bikes require service every 3,000–5,000 km or 3–6 months (whichever comes first). The first free service is usually at 500–1,000 km. Regular servicing maintains mileage, engine health, and warranty coverage.
What documents do I need to buy a new bike?
You need: Aadhaar card (identity + address proof), PAN card for purchases above ₹2 lakh, passport-sized photos, and your existing driving licence (or apply for a learner's licence if you don't have one).
